India, 1819. Hervey is ordered to raise and equip a new troop, secure transport for men and horses, and take it to India. The work exposes the practical foundations of cavalry service: recruitment, training, remounts, shipping and the discipline needed to turn a newly assembled unit into an effective force.

Near Chittagong, Burmese war boats and frontier instability require a difficult march through jungle country for which the troop is poorly prepared. Supply, disease, terrain and uncertain intelligence prove as dangerous as combat. The fictional crisis anticipates the border tensions that later developed into the First Anglo-Burmese War.
