The Wandering Prince
After the Royalist defeat, Charles Stuart lives in exile and searches the courts of Europe for the money, soldiers and diplomatic support needed to recover the English throne. France, the Spanish Netherlands and the Dutch Republic offer temporary refuge, but each alliance is shaped by interests larger than the displaced Stuart family.
The novel follows the future Charles II through the years between defeat and the Restoration of 1660. Courtship, family tensions and political calculation accompany repeated military and diplomatic setbacks, showing how exile shaped the prince who would eventually return to rule England. The novel has also appeared under the title The Exiled Prince.
