After the death of Henry V, the English crown passes to the infant Henry VI. His uncle John, Duke of Bedford, struggles to preserve the conquests in France, while Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, pursues ambitions that repeatedly complicate the government of a kingdom ruled in a child’s name.
The novel follows three women whose lives are caught inside these dynastic pressures, showing how marriage, inheritance and political alliance can determine personal futures. The minority of Henry VI creates opportunities for powerful relatives, but it also exposes the fragility of the Lancastrian settlement that Henry V appeared to have secured.
