Execution of the Romanov Family
1918
After Nicholas II abdicated in 1917, the former imperial family was held under guard and eventually transferred to the Ipatiev House in Ekaterinburg. The approach of anti-Bolshevik forces during the Russian Civil War increased pressure on the local authorities.
In the early hours of 17 July 1918, Nicholas, Alexandra, Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia and Alexei were killed with members of their household. The bodies were concealed, and uncertainty about their fate encouraged decades of rumours that one or more children had survived.
The House of Special Purpose places a fictional servant and love story inside the Romanov household while retaining the dynasty’s imprisonment and destruction.
