Pope Pius V

1504–1572

Pope Pius V was head of the Catholic Church from 1566 to 1572 and a leading figure of the Counter-Reformation. He excommunicated Elizabeth I and helped organise the Holy League that defeated the Ottoman fleet at Lepanto.

Pope Pius V also worked as Roman Catholic Bishop of Mondovì, Roman Catholic Bishop of Nepi and Sutri, and cardinal priest. Pope Pius V was born in Bosco Marengo and died in Rome.

In S. J. ParrisA Christmas Requiem, Rome, 1569. Giordano Bruno is summoned to demonstrate his extraordinary memory before Pope Pius V. Steven Veerapen’s Divided Loyalties is set in the year Pope Pius V excommunicated Elizabeth I, a decision that intensified English fears of Catholic conspiracy and foreign intervention. Walsingham and Catherine de’ Medici appear under their historical identities, while the Diamond League, the Cole marriage and the central plots are fictional. In Steven Veerapen’s The Last Judgement, the death of Pope Pius V brings the cardinals together to elect his successor, and Jack and Amy Cole are drawn into a city in which diplomatic factions, church politics and secret intelligence overlap.
