Olof Skötkonung was king of Sweden from around 995 until his death around 1022 and is one of the earliest Swedish rulers for whom substantial historical evidence survives. The son of Erik the Victorious, he ruled during a period when royal authority remained dependent on regional assemblies, aristocratic support and control of trade routes rather than on a fully centralised monarchy. Coins struck at Sigtuna in his reign are the earliest known Swedish royal coinage and show clear English influence.
Olof’s reign is also associated with the gradual establishment of Christianity within the Swedish kingdom. Later sources describe his baptism and his support for Christian clergy, although pagan cult remained powerful, especially in Svealand. He was involved in Scandinavian dynastic politics and conflict with Norway, while the marriages of his children connected the Swedish dynasty to Norway and Kievan Rus’. Much of the narrative preserved by later Icelandic writers is difficult to verify, so episodes such as confrontations with pagan subjects should be treated cautiously.
