Phase
Varangian Guard and Byzantine Succession
1041–1042 CE
The death of Emperor Michael IV in December 1041 brought Michael V to the throne under the influence of the powerful Empress Zoe and competing court factions. Attempts to remove Zoe provoked unrest in Constantinople and rapidly destroyed the new emperor’s support.
The Varangian Guard formed a prominent part of the capital’s military establishment and included many Scandinavian and Rus warriors. Their service placed foreign mercenaries close to moments when ceremonial legitimacy and armed power met inside the palace.
This setting supports fiction about Viking travellers adapting to Byzantine court culture, imperial succession and urban revolt. The Bear of Byzantium brings Halfdan’s Wolves and Harald Hardrada into the crisis surrounding Michael IV’s final illness.
