Norman–Byzantine Wars in Southern Italy, 1040–1043

Byzantine authority in southern Italy faced Lombard revolt and the increasing power of Norman mercenaries during the early 1040s. Imperial commanders attempted to recover towns and maintain the catepanate while alliances changed according to pay, patronage and local opportunity.

George Maniakes returned from Sicily to command in Italy but quarrelled with imperial officials and was recalled. His later rebellion in 1042–1043 turned an experienced general and his troops against Constantinople, further weakening Byzantine control.

The conflict offers historical fiction a setting of mixed armies, mercenary loyalty and the emergence of Norman power. Iron and Gold places the Wolves of Odin in Maniakes’s campaign and the choices created by secret imperial orders.
