Kaloyan of Bulgaria

Kaloyan ruled the restored Bulgarian Empire from 1197 to 1207. He sought international recognition, negotiated with Pope Innocent III and used the title king while asserting continuity with earlier Bulgarian tsars. After the Fourth Crusade created a Latin Empire at Constantinople, Kaloyan defeated its army at Adrianople in 1205 and captured Emperor Baldwin I. He died during the siege of Thessalonica, possibly through assassination within his own camp.

Kaloyan appears mainly in Balkan historical fiction about the Second Bulgarian Empire and the aftermath of the Fourth Crusade. No single English-language novel has established a widely recognised portrait, but his conflict with the Latin Empire offers dramatic reversals in which former crusaders become vulnerable conquerors. Fiction must also navigate sharply partisan Bulgarian, Byzantine and Latin accounts of his conduct.
