Dhoondia Wagh

died 1800

Dhoondia Wagh was an Indian military adventurer who built a short-lived power base after the fall of Tipu Sultan. He gathered cavalry and supporters across Mysore and the Maratha frontier before being defeated and killed by forces commanded by Arthur Wellesley in 1800.

Dhoondia Wagh was born in Channagiri. A former soldier of Tipu Sultan, Dhoondia Wagh built an armed following in southern India after the fall of Seringapatam; Arthur Wellesley led the campaign that defeated and killed him at Conaghul in 1800.

In Anthony Morland’s An Officer’s Justice, the Company must secure roads, convoys and garrisons while former Mysorean soldiers, local rulers, merchants and Company officials all try to profit from the broken political order. Culpepper’s pursuit of Dhoondia Waugh and his investigation of corruption draw him into a conflict where raids, intelligence work and office politics expose the fragile reality behind British claims of control.
