Siege of Gawilghur

Gawilghur was a major Maratha hill fortress in the Deccan, regarded as difficult to assault because of its height, defences and terrain. During the Second Anglo-Maratha War, Arthur Wellesley’s forces moved against it after earlier campaigning against Maratha armies.

The siege mattered because it closed a phase of Wellesley’s Deccan campaign and demonstrated the importance of hill forts, artillery, reconnaissance and disciplined assault in Indian warfare. It also showed that victory in the field did not remove the need to reduce strong fortified positions.

The Maratha Checkmate uses Gawilghur as the climactic fortress setting for William Culpepper’s campaign with Wellesley.
