Charles VI of France

1368–1422

Charles VI of France was the king of France whose long reign was weakened by recurrent mental illness and factional conflict. Rivalry between Armagnac and Burgundian factions contributed to civil war, English invasion and the disaster at Agincourt during the Hundred Years’ War.

In Joanna Hickson’s The Agincourt Bride, at the troubled court of Charles VI of France, the young servant Mette becomes wet nurse and companion to Catherine of Valois. In Simon Fairfax’s A Knight and a Spy 1410, in 1410, Henry IV’s illness and strained relationship with Prince Hal leave England politically unsettled while France watches for an opportunity to renew the Hundred Years’ War. Other novels featuring Charles VI of France include Bernard Cornwell’s Azincourt, Simon Fairfax’s A Knight and a Spy 1412, Simon Fairfax’s A Knight and a Spy 1415, and Simon Fairfax’s A Knight and a Spy 1413.
