Ursula and Gudrun Brangwen become involved with two men from the industrial Midlands: the school inspector Rupert Birkin and the mine owner Gerald Crich. Ursula and Birkin struggle towards a relationship based on equality and personal freedom, while Gudrun is drawn to Gerald’s power even as she resists the authority he expects to exercise over her.
The four travel together to the Alps, where the tensions between Gudrun and Gerald intensify and Gudrun forms an alliance with the sculptor Loerke. Gerald’s jealousy and emotional collapse bring their relationship to a violent end, leaving Ursula and Birkin to confront the demands, compromises and unresolved desires within their own attempt to create a new form of partnership.
