Sons and Lovers

Gertrude Morel’s marriage to the miner Walter Morel deteriorates under the pressure of poverty, drink and repeated conflict in their Nottinghamshire home. She redirects her ambitions towards their children, first William and then Paul, determined that her sons will escape the colliery life and social limitations that have embittered her marriage.
Paul grows into an artist while remaining emotionally bound to his mother. His intense friendship with Miriam Leivers and later affair with the married Clara Dawes are repeatedly distorted by Gertrude’s possessiveness and by Paul’s inability to commit himself fully to another woman. Illness and loss eventually force him to decide whether he can build an independent life beyond the family relationship that has shaped him.
