D. H. Lawrence and Italy

D. H. Lawrence and Italy brings together Twilight in Italy, Sea and Sardinia and Etruscan Places. Lawrence travels through communities around Lake Garda, crosses Sardinia by rail and road, and visits the surviving tombs and landscapes of the Etruscan cities of central Italy.
The journeys are recorded through encounters with innkeepers, labourers, travellers and local families rather than as conventional guidebook itineraries. Lawrence contrasts regional customs and ancient remains with tourism, mechanisation and modern political authority, turning the places he visits into an extended reflection on cultural survival and the effects of industrial society.
