Rex helps rescue relatives, travels with relief forces and enters Beijing as the foreign legations come under siege. His ability to move in disguise and carry information gives the novel a viewpoint that shifts between the besieged diplomatic quarter, Tianjin and the multinational forces advancing towards the capital during the Boxer Rebellion.
