When Harold is crowned and William invades in 1066, Edyth watches personal loyalty become inseparable from the fate of kingdoms. The defeat at Hastings leaves her responsible for children with claims to both English and Welsh power, and the novel imagines the choices of a woman largely lost from the record as conquest destroys the political world in which she learned to survive.
