The Gilded Lily
Winter, 1661. After Ella Appleby steals from her employer, she drags her quieter sister Sadie away from rural life and into Restoration London. Ella is dazzled by the city and by Jay Whitgift, proprietor of the fashionable Gilded Lily, while Sadie grows increasingly uneasy about the stories her sister tells and the dangers following them from home.
The sisters discover that London’s opportunities are inseparable from its inequalities. Beauty, money and reputation can open doors, but they can also conceal exploitation and crime. Against a backdrop of crowded streets, harsh winter weather and a rapidly changing consumer culture, the novel turns the bond between the sisters into both a source of conflict and their best hope of survival.
