The Escape

In Germany in the closing months of the Second World War, Detta works as a translator connected with a Nazi-run labour camp for French workers. When she sees exhausted British prisoners of war being forced westwards and learns that a local priest is sheltering escapees, she is confronted with a choice between self-preservation and helping men whom the regime regards as enemies. The danger intensifies as Germany collapses and the front moves closer.

A second narrative follows Miranda, a young London photography student who travels to Germany in 1989 as the Berlin Wall is opening and communist authority begins to unravel. A family connection draws her towards the village associated with her grandmother's past, while surveillance and the remnants of the East German security state shadow her journey. The two timelines gradually reveal how a secret formed in wartime Germany survived into the last days of the divided country.
