Prahotep, an unlucky Egyptian teenager, loses his father to a crocodile and leaves home after failing at the work expected of him. His fortunes change when he encounters Hathor, the last dragon in Egypt, whose surviving kin were hunted because humans believed dragon blood could prolong life.

Their escape from an ambitious magician carries them along the Nile and towards Nubia. Bradshaw builds the fantasy around the material world of ancient Egypt—fishing, quarrying, tombs, burial customs and river travel—while Prahotep’s quick thinking and friendship with Hathor turn a life marked by bad luck into an adventure beyond anything he expected.
