Colonel Julius Bainbridge and his niece Victoria are drawn into another Norwich investigation when a case acquires an apparently supernatural explanation connected with the city’s ‘mermaid’. Bainbridge is sceptical of curses and wonders instead who benefits when frightened witnesses begin treating legend as fact.
Their enquiries move through Victorian Norwich at a time when spiritualism, folklore and public fascination with the uncanny could easily obscure ordinary motives. As Bainbridge and Victoria separate rumour from evidence, the supposed curse becomes part of a more deliberate human crime whose solution depends on identifying what the supernatural story is being used to conceal.
