The Woman Who Spoke to Spirits

by Alys Clare Book 1 in the World’s End Bureau Mysteries series.

London, 1880. Accounts clerk Ernest Stibbins asks the World’s End Investigation Bureau for help after his wife Albertina, a spiritualist medium, says her spirit guides have warned that someone intends to kill her. Bureau owner Lily Raynor and her new employee Felix Wilbraham begin as sceptics, but a séance at the Stibbins home convinces Lily that the threat is real.

The case places a new pair of private enquiry agents inside the Victorian culture of mediums, séances and psychical belief, where performance, grief and genuine danger are difficult to separate. As Lily pursues the source of the threats, the novel establishes the World’s End Bureau in a London where unconventional investigators operate at the edges of respectable authority.
