Raven and Fisher Mysteries

The Raven and Fisher Mysteries follow Dr Will Raven and Sarah Fisher through Edinburgh from 1847 to 1854 as their investigations unfold inside the household and professional circle of pioneering obstetrician James Young Simpson. The sequence begins as anaesthesia is transforming medicine and carries the pair through suspicious deaths, medical rivalries, infant mortality, mesmerism and the exploitation of vulnerable women. Raven has access to formal medical training; Sarah has equal intelligence but must fight a system that excludes women from the profession.

Across five novels and the companion short story The Spendthrift and the Swallow, Ambrose Parry combines historical crime with the social and medical history of mid-Victorian Edinburgh. Simpson and other real figures anchor the fiction in the period, while the Old Town, New Town, Leith, hospitals, consulting rooms, brothels and scientific institutions expose the gulf between respectability and survival. The continuing relationship between Raven and Fisher gives the series its emotional thread as both characters confront the limits imposed by class, gender, reputation and professional ambition.
