The Art of Dying

Edinburgh, 1849. Will Raven returns to a city transformed by the rapid adoption of chloroform, but the new confidence of modern medicine is shaken when patients begin dying in circumstances their doctors cannot explain. At the same time a whispering campaign accuses James Young Simpson of causing a woman’s death through negligence. Raven and Sarah Fisher set out to clear Simpson’s name, only to discover that the unexplained deaths may be the work of someone whose methods exploit the assumptions and blind spots of the medical profession itself.

The novel develops the series’ central tension between innovation and authority. Chloroform has made Simpson famous, yet its power and novelty also make him vulnerable to professional rivalry, public fear and criminal misuse. Sarah continues to push against the limits placed on women who possess medical knowledge but no recognised route into practice, while Raven has to decide what kind of physician he intends to become. Their investigation turns Victorian Edinburgh’s hospitals, streets and private sickrooms into a landscape where scientific certainty is still dangerously incomplete.
