Colonel Julius Bainbridge and his niece Victoria are drawn into a Victorian mystery in which an apparently trivial household detail—a teaspoon that is not where it should be—refuses to fit the obvious explanation of events. Bainbridge’s suspicion grows as small inconsistencies begin to suggest that someone has arranged the evidence to make a deliberate act appear ordinary.
The investigation moves through a respectable social world where servants, guests and household routines create both clues and opportunities for concealment. Rather than relying on dramatic evidence, Bainbridge and Victoria must reconstruct who noticed what, when objects were moved and which witness benefits from dismissing the misplaced spoon as insignificant.
