The Curse of Carne’s Hold

by G. A. Henty

First published 1889

2.5(5)

A personal accusation and the collapse of an English life send the protagonist away from home and toward the British Cape Colony. South Africa offers distance from scandal but not safety, and a new existence must be built among settlers, travellers and communities shaped by the pressures of colonial expansion.

The adventure moves between private attempts at redemption and the hazards of the Cape frontier. Reputation remains difficult to escape even thousands of miles from England, while violence and uncertainty force the central character to prove himself through action rather than explanation. The novel uses the colonial setting to test whether a damaged name can be repaired when the circumstances that produced it are no longer present.
