Book
Tarzan Triumphant
First published 1931
Tarzan confronts raiders and pursues danger into the Ghenzi Mountains, where an isolated community descended from ancient settlers has developed a violent and distorted society. Lady Barbara Collis and other travellers are caught in the conflict, forcing Tarzan into another rescue mission.
Aeroplanes, expatriate travellers and armed expeditions place the framing story firmly in the interwar period. Beyond that recognisable world, the Ghenzi Mountains conceal another of Burroughs's isolated societies, where Tarzan's rescue mission becomes a confrontation with fanaticism, captivity and violence.
The Ghenzi community is another of Burroughs’s isolated societies, but the danger arises less from lost grandeur than from social distortion and fanaticism. Travellers who enter the mountains become caught in rules they do not understand, while Tarzan’s pursuit links several separate strands of captivity and rescue. The novel uses remoteness to imagine a community developing beyond outside correction.
