Tarzan’s Quest
First published 1935
Tarzan follows reports of the Kavuru after they abduct the daughter of Muviro, chief of the Waziri. At the same time Jane and a group of aeroplane-crash survivors struggle to survive in the jungle, and the two trails converge around the Kavuru’s guarded settlement.
Aircraft, safari travel and an international group of survivors place the story unmistakably in the 1930s. Against that modern frame, Burroughs introduces the secretive Kavuru and their pursuit of longevity, bringing Jane and Tarzan through separate dangers before their stories converge in a final rescue.
The Kavuru’s pursuit of prolonged youth gives the novel one of the series’ clearest encounters with the fantasy of immortality. Their secret depends on kidnapping and exploitation, making longevity itself morally corrupt. Jane’s parallel survival story also restores her as an active participant rather than merely a person to be rescued, while Tarzan’s pursuit joins family loyalty with the protection of the Waziri.
