Stockwin’s Maritime Miscellany gathers stories, terminology, customs and curiosities from the age of sailing ships. Drawing on Julian Stockwin’s naval experience and historical research, it explains maritime superstitions, shipboard animals, nautical expressions, unusual inventions and the practical culture that developed among generations of seafarers.

The collection ranges from early voyages of exploration through the Georgian and Napoleonic naval world to the later era of fast commercial sailing ships. It also examines familiar legends, including the treatment of Nelson’s body after Trafalgar, using short factual pieces and illustrations to introduce the material culture and language of life at sea.
