Set in Restoration England during the reign of Charles II, Russell follows fictional and political intrigue through a society rebuilding monarchy after civil war and republican government. Court favour, old Royalist loyalties and memories of the Interregnum remain powerful, while new political divisions emerge around religion and succession. James makes that unsettled atmosphere part of the characters’ private lives, where family history can still determine trust and opportunity.
The Restoration did not simply return England to the world that existed before 1642. The monarchy was constrained by Parliament, religious settlement remained contested and fear of Catholic influence contributed to successive political crises. By placing romance and conspiracy inside this environment, James shows a society in which outward elegance and court ceremony coexist with deep uncertainty about the future of the Stuart state.
