Rebel Empress

Born Athenais, the daughter of an Athenian philosopher, Aelia Eudocia comes to Constantinople and converts to Christianity before marrying Theodosius II. Her education and literary talent distinguish her at a court dominated by the emperor’s sister Pulcheria, where access to the ruler, religious orthodoxy and the production of heirs are political instruments.

Eudocia’s elevation to Augusta gives her patronage and influence, but court rivalry and theological controversy destabilise her marriage and position. The novel follows her from outsider to imperial consort, showing the tension between intellectual independence, Christian queenship, family loyalty and the precarious authority of an empress who cannot separate private affection from dynastic policy.
