Pericles, prince of Tyre, uncovers a dangerous secret at the court of Antioch and is forced into years of travel around the eastern Mediterranean. Storms, tournaments, famine and political danger shape his wanderings before he marries Thaisa, daughter of King Simonides of Pentapolis.

A sequence of apparent deaths and separations leaves Pericles believing that both wife and daughter are lost. His daughter Marina survives kidnapping and exploitation, while Thaisa has entered the service of Diana at Ephesus. The romance eventually reunites the family, using an imagined ancient Mediterranean of ports and kingdoms to explore endurance, providence and recovery after repeated catastrophe.
