Don Ignatio and the English adventurer James Strickland follow an ancient pictorial record into the interior of Mexico in search of the legendary Golden City, known as the Heart of the World. Haggard transfers the lost-world pattern from Africa to Mesoamerica, combining exploration, treasure, prophecy and romance with the spectacle of a society attempting to remain beyond colonial modernity.
