Call the Dying
First published 2004
A severe winter closes around Lydmouth as a séance, a dead woman and a bitter circulation war between two provincial newspapers disturb the town’s appearance of tranquillity. Small incidents involving a lorry driver, an office boy and a toyshop begin to form a pattern of coercion and concealed need.
Jill Francis returns as acting editor of the Gazette, while Richard Thornhill finds little satisfaction in either work or home. Their renewed proximity complicates an investigation in which emotional dependency is as important as evidence and several people are prepared to exploit the vulnerable.
