England, 1819. Thomas Shield becomes a master at a school near London and is assigned to two boys: the sensitive Charles Frant and his American companion, Edgar Allan Poe. Through them he enters the wealthy but unstable Frant household and becomes dangerously attracted to Charles’s unhappy mother.

A brutal crime draws Shield into a network of debt, inheritance, sexual jealousy and deception centred on the Frant estate. The novel, published in the United States as An Unpardonable Crime, imagines how the young Poe’s years in England might have intersected with the Gothic circumstances later associated with his writing.
