Monmouthshire, May 1945. Monkshill Park has become a struggling boarding school for girls, apparently removed from the violence of the war. Teacher Annabel Warnock has disappeared during the Easter holidays, but her trapped spirit remembers being pushed to her death from a cliff in the school grounds.
Replacement tutor and amateur crime writer Alec Shaw arrives among staff and pupils divided by rivalry, grief and uncertainty about missing relatives. Annabel can observe the secrets around her but has only limited means to reach Alec, making the murder victim an invisible witness to the investigation of her own death.
