Success in the ring attracts patrons whose wealth offers advancement but also makes him dependent on wagers, reputation and aristocratic favour. Each victory therefore increases both his status and his vulnerability.
His involvement with Lady Sarah exposes the social boundary that physical achievement cannot easily cross. Treece uses the prize ring to connect rural poverty, masculine honour and fashionable spectacle, following Ned as ambition tests his loyalties and sense of self. The novel was published in the United States as The Master of Badger’s Hall.
