David Downing

David Downing is a British author of historical espionage novels, political thrillers and non-fiction. Raised in suburban London, he has written on subjects ranging from military and political history to football and popular music. His fiction is distinguished by detailed historical research, morally ambiguous intelligence work and ordinary characters attempting to survive within authoritarian regimes, revolutions and international conflicts. His standalone novels include The Red Eagles, an alternative-history thriller, and The Diary of a Dead Man on Leave, set in Nazi Germany.

Downing is best known for the Station series, which follows Anglo-American journalist John Russell and German actress Effi Koenen through Nazi Berlin, the Second World War and the emerging Cold War. Beginning with Zoo Station, the series includes Silesian Station, Stettin Station, Potsdam Station, Lehrter Station and Masaryk Station, with Wedding Station serving as a prequel and Union Station continuing the story in 1953. His four Jack McColl novels—Jack of Spies, One Man’s Flag, Lenin’s Roller Coaster and The Dark Clouds Shining—follow a Scottish car salesman recruited into British intelligence amid imperial rivalry, revolutionary politics and the First World War.
