Leading Lives Oliver Cromwell
This biography follows Oliver Cromwell from his life as a Huntingdonshire landowner and Member of Parliament into the crises that produced the English Civil Wars. It explains his rise as a Parliamentarian cavalry commander, his association with the New Model Army and the military victories that made him one of the most powerful figures in the defeat of Charles I.
The book then examines Cromwell’s role in the Commonwealth, his campaigns in Ireland and Scotland and his eventual position as Lord Protector. His religious convictions, arguments over constitutional government and use of military power are considered alongside the continuing controversy over how his rule should be judged.
