Plague of Justinian
First wave, 541–549
The plague reached the Eastern Roman Empire in 541 and Constantinople in 542. Contemporary accounts describe very high mortality, disrupted burial, labour shortages and fear across the imperial capital and provinces.
Recurrent outbreaks continued for generations. The first wave coincided with wars in Italy, Africa and the east, reducing tax income, manpower and the ability of governments and armies to sustain long campaigns.
