Anne Laurence draws on social and economic history to consider marriage, sexuality, childbirth, household authority, paid work and the different expectations imposed on women according to class and marital status.
The book also explores education, religion and participation in local communities and public life. By comparing domestic labour with work outside the household, it shows how women contributed to the economy while remaining constrained by laws and customs that gave men greater control over property, employment and political authority.
