Early Modern Russia and Muscovy covers the period when Moscow became the dominant Russian power and the ruler’s authority developed into tsardom. Expansion, service nobility, Orthodox identity, frontier warfare and court violence shaped the state before the later imperial period.

This era matters because it created many of the political and social patterns later associated with Russian autocracy. Rule depended on military service, land grants, surveillance, dynastic legitimacy and the management of dangerous frontiers with steppe powers, Poland-Lithuania, Sweden and the Ottoman world.
