Anthony Babington

1561–1586

Anthony Babington was an English Catholic gentleman executed in 1586 for his role in a plot to assassinate Elizabeth I and place Mary, Queen of Scots, on the English throne. The exposure of the Babington Plot gave Elizabeth’s government the evidence it used against Mary.

In S. J. Parris’s Execution, Francis Walsingham has uncovered a Catholic conspiracy led by Anthony Babington to assassinate Elizabeth I and place Mary, Queen of Scots, on the throne. Rory Clements’s Holy Spy places Anthony Babington within a narrative shaped by political ambition and government, crime, espionage and covert power, and family, marriage and personal loyalty.
