The investigation takes Jim from the North Eastern Railway into the Highlands, Fleet Street and the ironmaking landscape of the north-east. Newspapers, railway photography, industrial rivalry and the harsh winter landscape all become part of a mystery in which information is as dangerous as physical evidence. The novel places its crime firmly inside late Edwardian Britain, with railways linking otherwise separate worlds of industry, journalism and travel.
