North-east India, 1923. Detective Inspector Jim Stringer has been seconded to the East Indian Railway to inspect security when a passenger is shot dead in the first-class compartment next to his own on the night mail from Calcutta to Jamalpur. He cannot be certain whether the victim was the intended target, while a second threat emerges as venomous snakes are deliberately placed in railway carriages.

Jim’s investigation unfolds within the racial and political tensions of the British Raj and becomes more personal when his daughter forms a connection with the son of a maharajah. Railway hierarchy, colonial privilege and Indian political unrest shape the people around him, while the vast network that is supposed to make the empire manageable instead gives danger a route from one place to another.
