Micah Clarke is raised in a stern Protestant household in Hampshire and is drawn into the Duke of Monmouth’s rising against James II in 1685. Travelling west with the experienced soldier of fortune Decimus Saxon, Micah enters the rebel army and encounters the mixture of religious conviction, political calculation and military improvisation that sustains the rebellion.
The campaign carries Micah through the dangers of the West Country to the defeat at Sedgemoor and its aftermath. Told as the recollection of an older man, the novel combines a coming-of-age adventure with a close view of Monmouth’s Rebellion, contrasting Micah’s inherited beliefs with the complicated motives of the people fighting around him.
