Set during the French Wars of Religion, Rose d’Albret combines a private romance with the political struggles surrounding Henry of Navarre before and after his accession as Henry IV. James places its fictional characters among rival noble networks, military factions and religious divisions that make neutrality increasingly difficult. Family decisions about marriage and allegiance acquire political meaning because personal connections can link households to one side of the civil conflict or the other.

The wider setting is a monarchy exhausted by decades of religious war and uncertain succession. Henry IV’s eventual consolidation of power offers the prospect of stability, but the novel is interested in the dangerous period before that outcome is secure. Journeys, negotiations and romantic promises are shaped by the possibility that a town, patron or military commander may change allegiance, making uncertainty one of the story’s most persistent historical pressures.
