Book
Through Three Campaigns
First published 1904
Through Three Campaigns follows a young soldier through three separate imperial wars at the end of the nineteenth century: the Chitral expedition of 1895, the Tirah campaign on the North-West Frontier in 1897–98, and the Ashanti campaign of 1900 in West Africa.
Each theatre demands a different kind of endurance, from mountain warfare and difficult supply lines to tropical campaigning and long marches. The changing settings allow the novel to compare the practical demands placed on soldiers while tracing a military career shaped by Britain's late-Victorian imperial conflicts.
