France, 1793. The uprising in the Vendée turns western France into a civil-war landscape as royalist and Catholic communities resist the revolutionary government. Families and local fighters are drawn into a conflict in which control of roads, villages and supplies can change rapidly and civilians are exposed to reprisals from both armies.

The novel follows young participants whose private loyalties become inseparable from the rebellion around them. Marches, ambushes and sudden reversals carry the action through a region where neighbours may support opposing causes and where political allegiance can determine whether a traveller is protected, arrested or killed. The adventure is rooted in the instability of a revolt that combined religion, local identity and resistance to revolutionary authority.
