Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call are now experienced Rangers serving under Captain Inish Scull as settlement pushes farther into Comanche country. When Kicking Wolf steals Scull’s horse, the captain follows him into Mexico and falls into the hands of the bandit Ahumado.

The effort to recover Scull unfolds beside the ageing Buffalo Hump’s struggle to preserve authority and the growing violence of his son Blue Duck. The novel spans the 1850s, the disruption of the Civil War and the years after it, showing the Rangers’ personal lives developing as Comanche independence is steadily destroyed.
